CAL TECH ROBOTICS COMPETITION

On March 12, 2019, the Pasadena Tournament of Roses partnered with Washington STEAM Multilingual Academy (WSMA) to send 30 middle school students and chaperones to the 34th Annual Engineering Design Competition, WABOBABOT Competition, held at California Institute of Technology ( Cal Tech). Cal Tech teams design, build, and operate three amphibious, radio-controlled robotic vehicles through the competition arena within Millikan Pond. Students were given the opportunity to view the robots up close and speak with the designers, who offered insight into STEAM options in college.

On March 13, 2019, 35 middle school students visited the UCLA campus for a tour and discussion about some of the University’s top academic programs. These Washington STEAM Multilingual Academy (WSMA) students, through a partnership with the Pasadena Tournament of Roses, gained insight into UCLA’s various campus cultural/social/ academic support programs, notable alumni, and visited some of the University’s famous campus locations.

 

FASHION INSTITUTE OF DESIGN AND MERCHANDISE

This month, we partnered again with Washington STEAM Multilingual Academy (WSMA) to send 30 middle school students on a college tour of the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising (Los Angeles Campus). In addition to a campus tour, students discussed the various fashion and design programs and their relation to STEAM in creating sustainable fashion. Students also received the opportunity to tour the 27th Annual Art of Motion Picture Costume Design Exhibition, featuring this year’s Oscar® nominees in Outstanding Achievement in Costume Design (e.g. Black Panther and The Avengers).

 

CALIFORNIA STATE UNIVERSITY, NORTHRIDGE
COLLEGE TOUR

In partnership with Rose City High School (RCHS), we hosted over 35 students and chaperones for a college tour of California State University, Northridge (CSUN). Students were provided with information on CSUN’s academic programs, on-campus cultural programs, and overall student life. The Educational Opportunity Programs (EOP) at CSUN, invited RCHS students to speak and hear from three current CSUN students regarding their on-campus experiences, overcoming obstacles, and following their passions and dreams in college. RCHS college tours have been scheduled at California State University, Los Angeles and Occidental College. Look out for future newsletters to read highlights from these excursions!

 

NATIONAL FOOTBALL FOUNDATION -
SAN GABRIEL VALLEY CHAPTER SCHOLAR -
ATHLETE BANQUET

Each year the Pasadena Tournament of Roses collaborates with the San Gabriel Valley chapter of the National Football Foundation (N.F.F.) to provide scholarships to two student athletes, who have excelled academically and served as a leader on their respective football teams. On March 27, 2019, we awarded these scholarships to Kenneth Collins of Bishop Amat, who will attend Davidson University in the Fall; and Andres Castellan of Montebello High School, who is deciding between the University of Southern California and UC Berkeley.

PASADENA POLICE ACTIVITIES LEAGUE -
17TH ANNUAL GOLDEN BADGE AWARDS


 

On March 28, 2019, Pasadena Tournament of Roses members attended the Pasadena Police Activities League 17th Annual Golden Badge Awards Dinner. This event celebrated community members who support youth in Pasadena.

 

ELIZABETH HOUSE - 25TH ANNIVERSARY GALA

On March 30, 2019, Pasadena Tournament of Roses supported the Elizabeth House event: Celebrating 25 years of Grace and Gratitude. This event helped raised over $30,000 to support women and children in need.

 
 

ALHAMBRA EDUCATIONAL FOUNDATION -
15TH ANNUAL SERVICE TO EXCELLENCE AWARDS GALA

On April 6, 2019, the Alhambra Educational Foundation (AEF) celebrated its 15th Annual Service to Excellence Awards Gala at the San Gabriel Hilton, where they helped raise funds in support of the 266 members of the Alhambra Unified School District All District Marching Band and their families. Funds are applied towards their 2020 Rose Parade performance. In addition, Pasadena Tournament of Roses President and Alhambra High School alum, Laura Farber, was recognized.

 
 

CHRIS HOLDEN WOMEN OF DISTINCTION AWARDS

In honor of Women’s History Month, California Assemblymember Chris Holden recognized phenomenal women within his 41st district. Pasadena Tournament of Roses President Laura Farber was recognized as his district’s overall Women of the Year. Laura Farber  and Tomas Lopez were flown up to Sacramento where Laura was presented with an award on the California State Assembly Floor.

 
 

FIRST TEE OF PASADENA

On March 16, 2019, First Tee of Pasadena hosted the Wounded Warrior Family Clinic held at Brookside Golf Course. Over 42 Wounded Warriors and their families were in attendance to hear Lt. Col Greg Massey’s speech on re-engaging with the community and utilizing the skills learned to seek out meaningful employment. This clinic, along with previous clinics and events, was made possible through the generous support of the Pasadena Tournament of Roses.
